Schedule your complimentary At-Home Sleep Screening

We offer free at-home sleep screenings to our existing patients. We use the same equipment that physicians use to do At-Home Sleep Studies.  We use a Belun ring, which a simple device you wear on your finger while you sleep for one night. Our equipment can help you understand your risk level associated with sleep apnea and if you should see a doctor. We have contracted with a sleep physician to read your At-Home Sleep Screening if necessary.  Please keep in mind when scheduling, you will need to both pick the ring, and bring it back the next day before 11:00am so the next patient scheduled can take it home.

Why would a dentist have home sleep testing equipment?

Sleep apnea is can be very serious. The gold standard for sleep apnea is a CPAP, but some struggle to wear it consistently. The second best device is a dental device called a mandibular advancement device (MAD). It works well for most snorers, and those with mild or moderate sleep apnea.  We use our home sleep testing equipment to make sure our patients with MADs are being treated effectively.

Snoring And Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea, while often seen as a nuisance due to snoring, carries significant risks to your health if left untreated. Here are some of the key dangers:
Cardiovascular Issues:
  • High blood pressure: Repeatedly interrupted breathing strains your heart, leading to increased blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke.
  • Heart disease: Untreated sleep apnea puts stress on your heart, increasing the risk of developing heart disease and coronary artery disease.
  • Stroke: The oxygen deprivation and strain on the heart increase the risk of blood clots forming, which can travel to the brain and cause a stroke.
Metabolic Problems:
  • Type 2 diabetes: Sleep apnea disrupts hormones that regulate blood sugar, raising the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Obesity: Sleep deprivation associated with apnea can contribute to weight gain by altering hunger hormones and decreasing energy expenditure.
Other Risks:
  • Daytime sleepiness: Chronic fatigue can affect your alertness, focus, and performance at work or school, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries.
  • Mood disorders: Untreated sleep apnea can increase the risk of depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders.
  • Cognitive decline: Oxygen deprivation during sleep can affect memory, learning, and overall cognitive function.
  • Headaches: The strain on the body and disrupted sleep patterns can lead to frequent headaches.
Symptoms of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea can be be greatly improved with a simple dental device that advances the mandible, however arriving at that point can be a little more complicated.

How Dentists can help with Sleep Apnea.

Traditionally, sleep MD's use Continuous Positive Airway Pressure or CPAP as the standard treatment for sleep apnea. This involves wearing a mask with hose connected while you sleep. As you can imagine, some patients can not tolerate a CPAP. Mandibular Advancement Devices are an alternative to CPAP and are a medically approved device to treat mild and moderate sleep apnea.  They are a device made by a dentist which incudes an upper and lower nightguard which together advance the mandible so that your upper and lower front teeth rest end to end while you sleep. It doesn't seem like much of a change in positioning, but a just a little more airway  from thrusting your chin forward while you sleep can save your life.

Why not just use a CPAP?

CPAP's are the standard of care. If you can tolerate one, then just keep using it. Unfortunately, many cannot tolerate a CPAP. Only 46% of patients wear CPAP's most nights. Over 90% wear mandibular advancement devices. Mandibular advancement devices are for those who have mild or moderate obstructive sleep apnea and who cannot or will not wear a CPAP.

Why choose us for your Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD).

Most patients are in one of two places. Either you are here looking for a CPAP alternative or you know you snore, and you fear you might have sleep apnea.  No matter your situation we offer specific advantages with our      mandibular advancement devices. Are you coming from out of state?

1. We use the best devices.

For patients who know they would like a long term mandibular advancement device we use Prosomnus EVO appliances. They are unmatched in there quality and comfort. You will have this appliance in your mouth for about 33% of the rest of your life, and the EVO appliance is hands down the best out there. It gives your tongue more room that other appliances. It doesn't discolor or smell bad because it is made with surgical grade plastic. You don't have to lock your upper and lower teeth together like most appliances.  Prosomnus supplies multiple EVO appliances so you can interchange them to get the advancement you need.
We use Silent Nite devices to provide a fast, comfortable, more affordable alternative to other devices. We also love it as a provisional sleep apnea device. It works the same as the EVO, with just a different advancement mechanism.  Using it you will learn if you can tolerate an oral appliance, if it will stop your snoring, and if you wear it while you get a sleep study you may get an idea if you could avoid wearing a CPAP (see #3).

2. We use scanning technology.

Scanning is more accurate than dental impressions allowing for a more comfortable and predictable fit. The scanning process is also more comfortable than taking an impression, which can trigger the gag reflex in some patients.
